Aging can be joyful, challenging, poignant—and sometimes downright funny. The Carmel Foundation invites the community to “Old Age Is Not for Sissies: A Staged Reading with Carol Marquart” on Wednesday, October 7, at 2:30 p.m. in Diment Hall. The program is free and open to the public, with refreshments served.
The lively staged reading takes an honest and entertaining look at the many sides of aging. Through poetry, elegies and short monologues, three versatile actors will bring to life the words and experiences of famous and not-so-famous voices, including Lewis Carroll, William Shakespeare, Dorothy Parker, Robinson Jeffers and Bette Davis.
Some selections are joyful and lyrical, while others are thoughtful, candid or wonderfully irreverent. Together, they create a funny, moving and distinctly human portrait of what it means to grow older.
Playwright and narrator Carol Marquart has written and produced staged readings throughout the Monterey Peninsula featuring fascinating figures from history and popular culture, including John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, Frank Lloyd Wright, Julia Child, Bette Davis, William Randolph Hearst and even Rasputin.
