Opening Reception Friday, November 6, 2026, at 6 PM — Free Admission
PACIFIC GROVE, CA — What happens when playful sea otters take over the masterpieces of art history? Artist Edi Matsumoto invites the public to find out at Otter Therapy, a whimsical solo exhibition opening Friday, November 6, at 6 PM at Pacific Grove Art Center, 568 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove, California.
Featuring approximately 30 original otter-themed artworks, the exhibition reimagines iconic masterpieces spanning the Renaissance to modern art, with a humorous twist on familiar works and beloved cultural figures. Visitors may encounter otter-inspired interpretations of classic paintings alongside recognizable personalities ranging from George Washington to Clint Eastwood.
Matsumoto, a Japanese-born artist and former nurse practitioner, brings a unique perspective to her work. After nearly three decades in healthcare, she devoted herself to art, combining her love of art history, storytelling, and humor to create paintings that invite viewers to pause, smile, and experience a little joy. Her Otter Therapy series celebrates the power of creativity and laughter to brighten everyday life.
The opening reception is free and will feature art, music, and food. Visitors can also explore downtown Pacific Grove’s First Friday festivities, making it an ideal evening to enjoy local art, culture, and community. Street parking is available.
The exhibition runs November 6 through December 10, 2026. Copies of Matsumoto’s book, Otter Therapy: Fifty Whimsical Whisker Moments for the Soul, will also be available for purchase.
Whether you love art history, sea otters, or simply need a reason to smile, Otter Therapy offers a playful reminder that art can inspire, surprise, and bring joy.
