About Us

The Carmel Bay Company was founded in 1972 and is owned by Barney and Patty Scollan. It is located on Ocean Avenue in the historic Seven Arts Building in the heart of downtown Carmel-By-The-Sea. The building was designed and built in 1925 by Patty's grandfather, Herbert Heron.

Herbert was the poet mayor of Carmel for two terms in the 1920's.

He was a playwright and Shakespearian actor and founded the world famous Forrest Theater which was the first outdoor theater in the Western United States and continues to be an important part of Carmel's cultural scene.

Early tenants of our building included: Carmel's first book store, the Carmel Art Association, and the studio of renowned photographer, Edward Weston.

The Seven Arts Building became a popular gathering spot for the many Bohemian artists and writers in Carmel including Herbert's good friend, Jack London.

The merchandise collection at ''the Bay Company'' has changed from Danish Antiques and art posters to several new departments including recycled furniture, an eclectic collection of books, kitchen and bath, original art by many of the area's top artists, and our newest addition, a stylish women's boutique.

We look forward to welcoming you to our ever changing store on your next visit to Carmel.
