The Crow Flies Backwards, an exhibit exploring approaches to Zen koans, opens Friday, August 10th, at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. Koans represent the saying of Zen teachers, as collected centuries ago in Tang China. Koan (Japanese) literally means “public case” (as in legal precedent), and these ancient cases continue to have relevance for modern Zen students, illuminating what it might mean to live free from repetitive forms of thinking and behaving.Through the thoughtful play of koan practice, students learn to live freshly and immediately with everything that arises – however it appears: as breath, headache or bird song.
This exhibition explores the diverse approaches of contemporary artwork and photography when paired with 9th century Chinese koans. From the forceful brushwork of Tracey Adams to the contemplative canvases of Leonard Han and the enigmatic spatial forms of Deanna Forbes. Other artists include Judith Foosaner, Sam Tschakalain, Allison Atwill, and Kenneth Parker.
The exhibit can be seen Wednesday through Friday from 11 to 4 p.m.; Saturdays, 12 to 4 p.m.; or by appointment through September 15th, 2018. The Carl Cherry Center is located at the corner of Fourth and Guadalupe, Carmel. Information: (831) 624-7491.
