John Thodos, FAIA (1934 - 2009) cultivated a fiercly independent and sophisticated Modernism which he deftly melded with the particulars of place and context creating some of the most distinguished architecture on the Monterey Peninsula. This talk traces his life and development of his unique style with special focus on his iconic works in Carmel-by-the-Sea, demonstrating his sensitive use of scale, material, form and detail.

Erik Dyar, AIA is an architect based in Carmel. Before establishing DYAR Architecture (dyararchitecture.com), Erik worked with John Thodos for 17 years as his primary associate. He received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon, is long-time chair of the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s Historic Resource Board, is 2020 Vice President of AIA Monterey Bay and author of an upcoming book from ORO Editions on the story of John Thodos’ last built design, an extraordinary home in Menlo Park, California.
